Hannah and Eyal Izrael established the Carmey Avdat eco-tourism farm in 1998. In the summer of 1999, they first planted on the remnants of a 1,500-year-old vineyard, utilizing ancient terraces and irrigation systems, and in 2005 the winery was established. Striking farm tzimmers (bungalows) built according to desert ecological construction principles line the property. Guests enjoy small pools that simulate desert oases beside refined lodges surrounded by orchards of Israeli fruit.
In the vineyard there are six varieties of wine grapes: barbera, viognier, merlot, petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon, and chardonnay from which 12 different types of wine are made in small batches of up to 1,000 bottles each. Carmey Avdat makes wine that expresses the unique and varied desert flavors through cold and long fermentation, thoughtful use of oak barrels, and minimal interventions. Carmey Avdat Farm also serves kosher wine.
The destination offers a variety of attractions, including vineyard and winery tours, lodging, delectable meals in the serene café next to a wine testing, group workshops, and a visitors center and shop featuring a range of local products.
